Craig's journey from house to home

Six years ago, Craig Sparre's life looked very different. Before 2018, Craig lived in a group home where his independence was limited and his everyday activities were largely chosen for him.

A pivotal change came when he secured approval for specialist disability accommodation (SDA) in his NDIS plan, with the help of his support coordinator and the inhousing team.

This meant Craig was able to find and secure an inhousing rental home and start a new chapter in his journey for greater independence.

Six months after moving into his Plympton Park property where he currently lives, his housemate moved out, leaving Craig to enjoy even greater freedom. For example, he adopted a greyhound called “Jennifer” whom he adores and with support from Michael and Linda of Care Disability Services, Craig lives alone and fills his days with activities he loves.

When asked how Craig feels about his home now, he said, "It's really great. I've got my own space. I get to pick and choose what I do."

Craig loves the convenient location of his home near the beach and the city, and often explores the neighbourhood on his own.

"I go swimming, I go to the gym and I see a personal trainer. I go out and visit friends, and I'm working in admin," says Craig.

Living independently has allowed Craig to travel to Melbourne with the help of Michael and Linda, and visit iconic tourist locations such as the MCG and Luna Park. Now, he has his sights set on a holiday to Sydney in September.

His accessible home, complete with wide entrances and hallways, allows Craig to move about freely in his wheelchair. He also enjoys the extra benefits of accessible and voice-activated technology, which was installed and programmed by the Care Disability Services team.

Craig's journey to independent living is proof of his persistence. His advice to others seeking SDA property? "Stay positive and work at it. Dreams can come true."
